buzzword
Definition
A trendy word or phrase that is used more to impress than explain.
Information
A buzzword may be a newly-coined word or an old word used in a new way. Buzzwords are part of the fashion of a living language, more about style than substance.
Some buzzwords are actually useful for a period of time, but the object they describe eventually becomes less useful. Other buzzwords are simply confusing or inaccurate from Day 1.
A buzzword spends only a fraction of its life being used; the rest of the time it is being abused. The result is a phenomenon known as buzzword backlash, whereby the tide turns against a buzzword and it starts to fade from usage.

euphemism
n.
The act or an example of substituting a mild, indirect, or vague term for one considered harsh, blunt, or offensive: “Euphemisms such as ‘slumber room’ . . . abound in the funeral business” (Jessica Mitford).
[Greek euph_mismos, from euph_mizein, to use auspicious words, from euph_mi_, use of auspicious words : eu-, eu- + ph_m_, speech.]
euphemist, n.
euphemistic, adj.
Euphemistically, adv.

“BUSINESS PLAN”: This is one of Tabacco’s pet peeves! It is a projection in which you outline how you intend to turn a profit in either a Startup or Existing Business you want to expand. Business Plans are ubiquitous! In fact, I cannot think of a single company with bank financing, which has gone bankrupt, that did not have one.
“CAPITALISM”: The more Research I do, the more examples I find in which the United States and other Western “Capitalist” powers have played dirty with smaller, non-Capitalist countries, to exploit them and prevent them from succeeding. Today I found out about East Timor. That Post will follow soon.
The USA has blockaded and embargoed Cuba since Castro drove Batista and the US Mafia out of their country. But are you aware that today’s Cubans, under a Socialist-Communist regime, don’t pay rent, water, electricity and many other expenses Americans take for granted? Why didn’t you know? So you think Capitalism is the Economic System to end all, huh! Aren’t you glad you read ‘Tabacco’?
If you attempt to build a mini-structure out of matchsticks, and I come along to knock them down before you complete it, then say, “See, I knew you would fail” – then you represent a Socialist state and I represent the USA (a Capitalist regime).
If Socialism is so ineffective and doomed to failure, why does the USA always try to destroy it in countries where it is tried before it has a chance to succeed? Capitalists are afraid! They know Capitalism is unfair to the Majority. They realize that a Successful Socialist State, in plain sight and known to the entire world, would spell the end to their “Gravy Train”: Capitalism!
In slavery days, Southern slave owners stated unequivocally that teaching Negroes to read was pointless because they did not possess the aptitude to learn. Then they passed laws, which made it a crime for Whites to teach Negroes to read. Both Capitalists and slave owners are and were guilty of “Chutzpah” in the 1st degree. Incidentally, in case you do not know, Tabacco is a “Negro”!
“COLLATERAL DAMAGE”: If the FBI were trying to capture or kill drug kingpins, who lived in your apartment building or in the house next door, then blew up or shot your family in the process, and called those deaths “Collateral Damage”, how would you react?
Then why are you skeptical and patently antagonistic toward Iraqi or Muslim Terrorists? Don’t you, as Americans, deserve retribution! Come on now, try to be unbiased and objective. I know how hard that is for you! But don’t you think it is equally hard for innocent Muslims, whose relatives and friends are now “Collateral Damage”!
“CONSERVATISM”: Neoconservatives or Neocons are NOT CONSERVATIVE! That’s why Tabacco refers to them as “QuasiCons”!
conservatism
n.
1. The inclination, especially in politics, to maintain the existing or traditional order.
2. A political philosophy or attitude emphasizing respect for traditional institutions, distrust of government activism, and opposition to sudden change in the established order.
3. Conservatism The principles and policies of the Conservative Party in the United Kingdom or of the Progressive Conservative Party in Canada.
4. Caution or moderation, as in behavior or outlook.
http://www.answers.com/topic/conservatism?cat=biz-fin
Now how does that definition square with the Bush administration’s behavior? They are NOT “Neocons” (“New Conservatives”); they are NOT CONSERVATIVE AT ALL!
“DEMOCRACY”: Those, who invoke that term the most to justify genocide, theft of resources, and laws, preferential to the richest among us, are always the most totalitarian, tyrannical, manipulative and repressive. In short, Bush, Romney, Giuliani, Huckabee and McCain know what’s best for us despite our opposition to their stated goals. That’s not “democracy”; that’s totalitarianism and paternalism!
“EVANGELICAL”: What is “evangelical” and angel-like about those, who commit genocide and call it “collateral damages”, who steal the oil of others and call it “democracy”, who look the other way while real estate investors turn New Orleans, after Katrina, into a “Playland” for the ‘Have-Mores’ at the exclusion of its former poor residents, and who teach hatred of homosexuals and abortion doctors while calling them “abominations”! Where is the love in those actions!
“FAITH-BASED”: This Euphemism is used so Bush can give our Tax Dollar$ to Christian Churches, who in turn donate back to GOP coffers and for FTAs (Free Trade Agreements), implying that we the People must have faith in Capitalism and “Free Trade”, which does not exist! That’s why it is so hard for so many NOT to “Hate Religion”. I guess if they can “hate the act and not the person”, then Tabacco can do likewise. But I cannot do likewise, and neither can they!
“FAIRTAX”: What is “fair” about decreasing the tax proportionately to how rich you are, while increasing taxes on those, who can afford it least, because of a seldom mentioned item known as “Revenue-Neutrality”!
Ask yourself if you ever paid CASH to a tradesman, who then declined to charge you the State Sales Tax. If Sales Tax can be overlooked today, just imagine the incentive to overlook it when the combined State/Federal Sales Tax is 30-40% instead of only 8%.
Now ask yourself how a “FairTax” would be enforced when nobody keeps track of business inventory except the business itself. And that inventory is only reported if an audit occurs or if the company volunteers that complete information at tax time. Oh, I forgot: if we institute “FairTax”, there won’t be any April 15th!
Without an audit, there will be no regulation or government oversight. And you know how the GOP loathes government oversight and regulation! The “FairTax” is just one more “Trojan Horse”! Without the IRS, there can be no government audit! In such a Republican “Utopia”, how long would it be before even honest businesses became dishonest! Do I hear “5 seconds”!
“FOOD INSECURITY”: Euphemism for Starvation & the inability to buy food because of Poverty, not a lack of food. If I call a Rose a Violet, will you be uninjured and feel no pain if you prick your finger on a thorn?
“FREE TRADE”: The Republicans keep on repeating, “The Market works! We need less Regulation and Lower Taxes.” But it’s the Conservative-Republicans, who are the biggest spenders, not the Democrats. Ronald Reagan began this Machiavellian scheme. While calling Democrats “Tax and Spend Democrats”, the GOP became the Party of “Borrow and Spend Republicans”, which delays the payback problem for future generations and absolves them of immediate guilt. Since it doesn’t hurt us today, nobody complains too much or too loudly. Occasionally every GOPer wants to “Cut Entitlements” (You won’t like that!), but none of them seriously wants to “Cut War”, which is this nation’s Top Growth Industry.
When Republicans repetitiously and gratuitously intone, “We need to cut taxes”, that is the “GRAND DECEPTION”! It is IMPOSSIBLE to “Fund Expensive Wars, Cut Taxes and Spend Less all at the same time”. Try it sometime. And that doesn’t take into consideration the IMMORALITY of War & Invasion for PROFIT!
How can you achieve that Triumvirate Of The Impossible: “Fund Expensive Wars, Cut Taxes and Spend Less, all at the same time”? Answer: You delete Social Security, Unemployment Compensation, Medicare & Public Education! Then the Middle Class will get nothing out of Capitalism at all – NOTHING!
Or you can “Privatize” Social Security, Medicare & Public Education (Vouchers for Privatized Schools) to turn them into moneymakers. That means the end of Public Education of course! You can also raise the “premiums” on Unemployment Compensation, making it prohibitive for tail-enders in the workforce. Then the “Entitlements” are permissible because they all bring in Profit. That’s the “Republican Way”. But guess who suffers even more! Go ahead; guess!
“GNP - Gross National Product”: Informs us how Business is doing. If the health of American Business were related to the health of American workers, the GNP would have some relevance. But in the 21st Century, those two criteria are “mutually exclusive”! Therefore we must either use two separate “Indicators” or change over to the GPI (Genuine Progress Indicator), which Tabacco favors and will publish about in the near future.
“GOD”: Those, who shout his name the loudest and most frequently, are generally the same, who believe in Him the least, with the possible exception of Atheists and Agnostics.
“INTELLIGENT DESIGN”: You can call it logic. You may call it the Truth. But you certainly cannot call it “Science”. In the Middle Ages, “Alchemy” was also considered “Science”.
alchemy, n.
1. A medieval chemical philosophy having as its asserted aims the transmutation of base metals into gold, the discovery of the panacea, and the preparation of the elixir of longevity.
http://www.answers.com/topic/alchemy?cat=health
It seems quasi-religious people have not advanced or learned anything since the medieval times. Calling ‘Intelligent Design’ “Science” is equivalent to calling Alchemy “Science” or giving Santa Claus his own “Reality Show”!
Strange as it may seem to non-cooks, homemade ice cream tastes better with a grain of salt. Similarly, Religion is more palatable if the same seasoning is applied.
“JESUS CHRIST”: When did Jesus live in an expensive dwelling, drive the latest chariot, or pass the collection plate! If memory serves me correctly, didn’t he drive the moneychangers out of the Temple rather than into it!
Both Politicians and Televangelists misappropriate his name for their own selfish and financial purposes. Using Jesus’ name to profit oneself is Hypocrisy, Sophistry and in all likelihood BLASPHEMY, according to their own stated beliefs. These types cannot believe in Hell – for without doubt that is where their stated beliefs consign them for eternity.
“NATIONAL INTERESTS”: There is no such thing as “National Interests”. There are “Big Business Interests” and there are “People’s Interests”. Those two are generally MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE, particularly in Capitalist States. What’s good for Big Biz is usually BAD for the rest of us.
The USA is occupying Iraq, a very important and prolific oil-producing country, but the price at the pump is rising! You care! But do you really believe Exxon cares! The higher the price at the pump, the higher their profits. Exxon’s interests are NOT your interests.
If you truly are religious and ethical, you do not believe in KILLING, let alone GENOCIDE. Without Killing and Genocide, BlackWater could not exist. BlackWater’s interests are NOT your interests.
The World Bank loans money to 3rd World countries under specific conditions such as Privatization, which favor Capitalist Investors in countries such as the USA. These “loans” are the tool that Capitalists use to steal the natural resources of 3rd World countries. Even if you are not religious and have no ethics, the profit made by those, using the World Bank to Scam those poor countries, does not go into your pocket. The World Bank’s interests are NOT your interests.
“NATIONAL SECURITY”: George W. Bush is covering his personal ass – that is not “national security”. If George W. Bush and Dick Cheney were tried and convicted by the World Court for War Crimes, Nancy Pelosi would become president. America’s “national security” would be improved.
When the Mafia-Neocons get caught, tried and convicted for criminal behavior, Bush gives them presidential clemency as he did for “Scooter” Libby. He doesn’t do it to protect “national security”; he does it to protect the GOP illegal, treasonous schemes and ultimately his own personal ass. That is NOT “national security”. “National Security” has become one of the most overused Buzzwords since Bush took office in 2001.
“NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND”: What is positive or ameliorative for children about legalizing the act of permitting military recruiters to stalk, proselytize, propagandize and recruit our youth in our public schools!
“OUTSOURCING”: In poor countries, Outsourcing is great because jobs are created by rich countries in their country that they are unable to create on their own.
But in rich countries, the jobs are created elsewhere. This benefits businesses only, not the workers!
Unlike importing, which creates domestic jobs to handle the imports, both physically and re documentation, Outsourcing removes jobs in rich countries and gives them to workforces in 3rd World Countries, which work very cheaply, have little opportunity to increase their wages, and receive few or no benefits.
We’ve been rooked! When they say it’s good for the Economy, they mean the Business Economy, not the people’s Economy. When they say “you”, they don’t mean the many, they mean the few. They rely on your erroneous assumption that they mean everybody. The Middle Class must NEVER listen to the GOP on economic issues. They don’t care about you; they only care about themselves. Big Biz and the Politicos knew in advance what Outsourcing would mean. Only the People were unpleasantly surprised!
And if you think Republicans are untrustworthy on economic issues, remember that 28 Republicans, including John McCain (shhhhhh!) and only Republicans voted for the Allerton Amendment, which would have made the Minimum Wage extinct! They are worse on Social Issues! And they love to call themselves the “Party of Lincoln”. And typewriters are still the main tool of business in America, not the PC!
“PATRIOT ACT”: What is “Patriotic” about secret surveillance, torture, lying, genocide, stealing, and various other “patriotic’ acts legalized or implied in the euphemistically named legislation!
“PRIVATIZATION”: Another approach to “Smaller Government”. There are two objectives:
a) Remove Government oversight and regulation to permit Scoundrels to Cheat the Public and Endanger us with defective products & Capitalist HMOs;
b) Make Entitlement Programs profitable for Private Investors.
They tell us that Government is inefficient. They neglect to tell us that Private Sector is invariably more inefficient and much less concerned about the Public Welfare. Privatizers are concerned only with their “Quarterly Reports” & “Bottom Line”! Medical Care, Old-Age Income (Social Security), Unemployment Compensation Safety Net & Public Education must NEVER have to rely on the “Compassion of Capitalists”! George W. Bush called himself “Compassionate” – Was he? Is he? You tell me!
“SMALLER GOVERNMENT”: What they mean is less REGULATION of business and privatization of Entitlement programs so Investors can profit from them at our expense! When Bush began giving away our Tax Dollar$ to Churches, that Initiative involved government expansion, not contraction.
Amnesty for 12 million - 20 million Illegal Aliens would involve government expansion, not contraction. When it benefits Big Business or the Military-Industrial Complex, the Neocons have no problem with “Larger Government”. But when it involves government regulatory agencies, then they want “Smaller Government”. If government cannot or won’t check, you get Enron, the current Subprime Mortgage Crisis, the Savings & Loan Scandal, Exxon’s Oil Scams and all forms of business cheating. Whatever, can be imagined, will be done!
There is absolutely nothing wrong with “larger government” if that increase involves necessary Regulation of Entitlement Programs instead of Privatization or Anti-Trust restraint of Big Biz. ANYBODY, who uses that Buzzword, “Smaller Government”, is being disingenuous and Sophistic and relies on the ignorance of the Public.
“S P P / SECURITY AND PROSPERITY PARTNERSHIP OF NORTH AMERICA”: What is more “secure” about opening one’s Canadian and Mexican borders, which puts America’s security in the hands of others! Where is the “prosperity” for Americans in permitting poor Hispanics to take jobs away from American citizens and serve in the US military! Answer: Prosperity for the Rich, the Disaster Capitalists and Big Business, not Middle Americans nor American poor!
“STRICT CONSTRUCTIONISM”: “We nominate judges, who follow the Constitution and do not make laws”. THAT’S A DAMNABLE LIE! That type of judge would have kept America as an officially-segregated society. That type of judge would never have overturned “Separate but Equal”. That type of judge is not “strict constructionist” but a judge, who turns his head and looks the other way when Bush tortures, steals and murders in the name of “national security”. That type of judge rules in favor of “Eminent Domain” for real estate investors at the expense of homeowners – all in the cause of Profit! And that type of judge Cherrypicks which Constitutional imperatives he or she will enforce and which imperatives he or she will apply “Biblical” or “Political” criteria to. “Strict Constructionism” is nothing more than a Buzzword!
“Strict Constructionism” implies that everything in the Constitution was great and good. Omission of Women’s Suffrage and “3/5 of all other persons” are just 2 of many improprieties, unfairness and downright injustice contained in that document. A Strict Constructionist would be prohibited by definition from righting Wrongs contained therein.
“STRONG LEADERSHIP”: When our leaders know better than we do about what is right, correct and advisable, that is more than “strong leadership”; that is “PATERNALISM”! Being obstinate and intractable are NOT the signposts of “strong leadership” unless you consider Adolf Hitler and George W. Bush strong leaders. Obstinacy and intractability are the signposts of Tyrannical and Totalitarian leaders. Americans need to understand the difference. Being a father or a mother to a small child is not equivalent to being president of the United States of America!
“SUPER-SIZED”: If you take a moderate-sized hamburger and “super-size” it, you encourage obesity, increase bad cholesterol, influence overeating and create a “live to eat” instead of an “eat to live” society.
If you take a successful moderate-sized business or government entity and “super-size” it, you encourage incompetence, negligence, perpetual never-decreasing budgets, group-compromise over individual decision-making, and red tape.
Be careful about what you wish for!
“SUPPLY-SIDE ECONOMICS”: That is so obvious, it’s breathtakingly incomprehensible how the GOP got this one by the Public. I guess the best place to hide Evil is in plain sight. The name tells you who gets the advantage. One of the few times when a euphemistic misnomer is not the accepted title. This designation is unique in its confrontational manifestation and chutzpah-like honesty.
“UNIVERSAL HEALTHCARE”: Like “No Child Left Behind” and “The Patriot Act”, this is another humanitarian or ameliorative-sounding initiative, which has unstated Machiavellian purposes. No Democratic candidate, except the ignored and now non-running Dennis Kucinich, had the chutzpah to say the words
Universal Healthcare without “Single-Payer” means the government with oversee it with the Insurance Companies getting their 35% and the American Pharmaceutical Industry overcharging the Medicare patients. Without “Single-Payer”, Medicare may include more people, but it certainly won’t change its Machiavellian stripes. Shame on Clinton, Obama and Edwards for only telling “HALF-TRUTHS”!
“Why would Democrats only tell ‘HALF-TRUTHS?’”, you ask. Because their reelection coffers are filled with lobbying donations from the Insurance Companies and the American Pharmaceutical Industry. Politicians tend to favor those, from whom they get the largest donations!
If Obama doesn’t take “Payola” from these groups, why doesn’t he even mention “Single-Payer”! Ask yourself that rhetorical question!
“VENTURE CAPITAL or VULTURE CAPITALISTS”:
venture capital
Definition
VC. Funds made available for startup firms and small businesses with exceptional growth potential. Managerial and technical expertise are often also provided. also called risk capital.
http://www.investorwords.com/5236/venture_capital.html
If you have an idea for a startup business with honest exceptional growth potential, you may get some “venture capital”. However, if your idea concerns “vulture capitalism” in which you cheat, steal and exploit, you are almost guaranteed to get that “venture capital”. That’s how Capitalism works, folks!
“WORLD BANK”: The World Bank, WTO and IMF are elaborate Capitalist schemes, invented by Caucasian countries to exploit and rape non-Caucasian countries for their own benefit and profit. Paul Wolfowitz being the president of the World Bank makes that Truism impossible to ignore or refute by any honest, sincere person! That’s like appointing Heinrich Himmler head of the SS in Nazi Germany and declaring him to be a “Compassionate Conservative” – or electing George W. Bush as US president!
“WORLD PEACE”: When individuals use that phrase, they are generally sincere. When politicians and Talking Heads use that “catch phrase”, they are usually euphemizing Disaster Capitalism. Remember how the Wolf impersonated grandma to deceive Red Riding Hood?

How to Cut Through Corporate BS

Dying dot-com syndrome has given the so-called "new economy" a black eye.
Turns out the new economy is a lot like the old one: Making money still matters.
Unfortunately, the language of the new economy -- and all the buzzwords that go with it -- are with us for good.
So today I've put together my first Buzz-Word Exploder, a short guide to today's buzzwords, and links for deflating them. Use this guide to decipher tech business babble from your boss or stare down marketers who hope you'll nod knowingly at their gibberish. First let's look at the big offenders, and then I'll tell you how to have real fun.
BUZZ WORDS DU JOUR
New words to describe business on the Internet are useful in some places..
You can hardly tell that from reading today's business plans and corporate mission statements. Fashionable tech catch phrases suggest companies are on the cutting edge of something when, in fact, they are doing something decidedly traditional, or worse, aren't really certain what they're doing.
Path to profits. An admirable goal. And one recently adopted by many. The Industry Standard reports the phrase was used 125 times in press releases between April and August of this year. Compare that to the three times annually the phrase was used between 1996 and this past April.
Solution. A regrettably permanent part of the jargon now, almost everyone uses it with abandon. This is software or a software and hardware package designed for a specific purpose or company. It's totally vague and raises the question: What happens when you have a problem with your solution?
End-to-end. Often written with particular redundancy as "complete end-to-end." It's meant to imply that whatever Company X builds for one part of your organization will work with whatever they build for another. Nice. Then they want to train you to use it. What it can really mean: Their technology is proprietary, won't work with anyone else's and once you're roped in, you're stuck.
Core competencies. The things Company X says it's good at. What it can really mean: Company X isn't going to take responsibility for the things they screw up outside their core competencies.
Best-of-breed. Translation: Best, but also, "our software is apples, theirs is oranges. Don't try to compare us."
Client-focused. Well, who else are you going to be focused on?
Smart-size. This is actually used as a verb. As in, do you wanna smart-size that? This is the kind of verbal sleight of hand you expect from politicians. What other sizes are there?
FUN WITH BUZZ WORDS
Don't stop now. Buzzwords are best when used together. Here are some sites that will help.
Buzzword Bingo. Print out Buzzword Bingo cards and hand them out to friends before going in to meetings. Inspired by a Dilbert comic strip.
Bullshit Generator. This can also be used to write stellar business plans and press releases. Just click the button and you can instantly come up with phrases like, "mesh bleeding-edge initiatives."
Mission Statement Generator - If you need a mission statement in a hurry, the Catbert Mission Statement Generator will do it in a flash.
Modern companies' reliance on buzzwords would be funnier if there weren't millions of dollars and thousands of jobs at stake. I'd protect you from all the buzzwords if I could, but it's just not one of my core competencies.
What's your favorite buzz word? Hit the Talkback button and tell me the worst. Or go to my Berst Alerts Forum where you can make it into an action item.

Tabacco: I consider myself both a funnel and a filter. I funnel information, not readily available on the Mass Media, which is ignored and/or suppressed. I filter out the irrelevancies and trivialities to save both the time and effort of my Readers and bring consternation to the enemies of Truth & Fairness! When you read Tabacco, if you don’t learn something NEW, I’ve wasted your time.
In 1981's 'Body Heat', Kathleen Turner said, "Knowledge is power".

T.A.B.A.C.C.O. (Truth About Business And Congressional Crimes Organization) – Think Tank For Other 95% Of World
I neglected to include one of the most important and overused BUZZWORDS of
all: al-Qaeda!
President Bush: "In order for this economy to grow, it is important to make the tax relief permanent, and that is what this budget reflects. It is a budget that boosts money for education, and health and housing, it helps us deal with the issue of making the tax code more fair for individuals who want to buy health insurance in the individual market.”
President Bush: “This budget is one that keeps spending under control. Discretionary spending is held to less than 1 percent. It elements 151 wasteful or bloated programs, saving the taxpayers 18 billion dollars. It also takes a hard look at entitlement growth over the next five years, and provides specific recommendations to save $208 billion dollars over those five years.”
