PETE SAMPRAS SYNDROME!

When Being The Best

Isn’t Enough

Tabacco: I just finished watching Spaniard Rafael Nadal defeat German Nicolas Kiefer in straight sets 7-6 6-2 6-3. It wasn’t that close! After the last point, Nadal punched the air as a signal he had done something spectacular and really relished doing it. I felt sorry for Nadal, not Kiefer. Your grandmother couldn’t have done much worse than Kiefer score-wise in this match.

Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer are so far ahead of everybody else on tour, except maybe Novak Djokovic, that when they dispose of another high-ranked player so easily, it is embarrassing for them to have to be so demonstrative about it. These guys don’t want to demean another player with the skill set of a Kiefer. But they have to or else the press and the people will say “Nadal doesn’t show enough emotion” or “Federer doesn’t show enough emotion”.

It is even more embarrassing to watch Federer celebrate after a lopsided victory than Nadal because Federer is even less accomplished than Nadal at “rubbing their noses in it”. Both stars are really nice guys, but the bullring public demands not only a winner but a public execution. This display is similar to the gallery watching the Gladiators in the Coliseum. After one Gladiator was victorious, the crowd gave a thumbs-down, which meant the Victor had to execute the Vanquished on the spot to satiate the crowd’s bloodthirsty appetite.

So how did the sedate sport of tennis with its all-white attire Wimbledon tradition get to be like the Gladiator in Ancient Rome! In two words – PETE SAMPRAS! Pete Sampras is the greatest American player of all time, one of the top 5 on anybody’s list, with 14 Grand Slams (2 more than the 2nd player on the all-time list). But Americans didn’t appreciate Sampras. They criticized, not his playing nor his heart, but his unwillingness to demonstrate great emotion after vanquishing a totally outclassed opponent. The media said, “Pete lacks personality”.

But we all loved Andre Agassi before he had won anything because Agassi had charisma, as in the 1990 Canon commercial where he said, “Image is everything!”

The good news is that Agassi became the 2nd greatest American male tennis player, but only after he lost the flowing mane and the “image”. Agassi is a nice guy too, and he never really had to walk on the graves of vanquished opponents. He usually celebrated by bowing in all 4 directions and blowing kisses to the crowd. I wonder what Ancient Rome would have thought of that!

Pete Sampras won 14 Grand Slams, a record! Sorry, Pete, but where’s the personality?

Andy Roddick has won 1 Grand Slam, and in all likelihood will never win No. 2. But Andy has oodles of personality. America prefers Roddick’s personality and failures to your lack of personality and successes!

Current players don’t have Agassi’s commercial or Agassi’s “image”, so they have to execute their vanquished opponents in public view for all to see and for the Vanquished to feel. They have to air-punch after a great shot to demonstrate their virility! Please note that air-punch is really faked because you can blow out a muscle or tendon if you really let one go. Watch how they pull their punches next time somebody gives an air-punch.

The Truth is that all the celebrating is basically FAKED! So what! Americans don’t care about sincerity; they only care about IMAGE!

When NFLers, NBAers, MLBers or ILTFers dump on their vanquished foes, they are usually doing it because they don’t want to become today’s Pete Sampras. Sportsmanship is long gone; and forget about good manners! To show either of those qualities will doom you in the public’s eyes and ultimately affect your income. This in-your-face attitude naturally has not escaped the playgrounds of America. You can’t make your opponent just look silly; you must also verbally reduce him to ashes. All athletes today must act like schmucks or be doomed to the “Pete Sampras Syndrome”.

The “Pete Sampras Syndrome” also affects the Williams sisters, but for a totally different reason. Of course the Williams sisters obey the unwritten rules and physically demonstrate their involvement in matches – particularly Serena; but they are still not adored, just grudgingly admired in America. If a Williams doesn’t win, the winner is generally a foreigner. Americans prefer a foreigner to win to one of the Williams sisters. Why is that?

They loved Jennifer Capriatti! They loved Chrissie Evert! They even loved Martina Navratilova – she was not only born in a foreign country, naturalized American now, but she’s an in-your-face lesbian. So why doesn’t America’s tennis elite respond to the Williams sisters? The Brits are polite to the Williamses, but their love is reserved for Brits, other Europeans or white Americans. A mangy dog from Outer Mongolia would get the public’s approval before a Williams sister. Let’s see if you can guess why that is!

Do white audiences still resent it and take it personally when black stars celebrate after vanquishing white opponents! Or do they just resent the win itself!

PS No American male made it past the 3rd Round at Wimbledon this year –NONE! I bet Americans could appreciate Pete Sampras now!

PSS One final note: Just imagine what would have happened to Arthur Ashe, black champion, had he yelled and screamed at officials the way white champion, John McEnroe, did!

Tabacco: I consider myself both a funnel and a filter. I funnel information, not readily available on the Mass Media, which is ignored and/or suppressed. I filter out the irrelevancies and trivialities to save both the time and effort of my Readers and bring consternation to the enemies of Truth & Fairness! When you read Tabacco, if you don’t learn something NEW, I’ve wasted your time.

SELDOM MENTIONED FACT!

We all know the story about how Adolf Hitler got his Aryan nose rubbed in it when Black American, Jesse Owens, beat his Caucasians. We also know how demeaning it was to the Fuhrer when Max Schmeling tasted canvas against Black American, Joe Louis.

What is NEVER MENTIONED is the comeupance Christians everywhere got when flag waving American, Christian George Foreman, was not only outfought but outthunk by "unAmerican draft dodger", Muslim Muhammad Ali. Imagine that! The champion of Muslim Allah beat the champion of Christian God in hand-to-hand combat. That's like Goliath beating David!

Now you know why it is never mentioned in those terms in "Christian" America! This only demonstrates how silly, how trivial and how ridiculous Religions can be! Apparently sometimes God favors Muslims, Atheists and even unAmericans - how awful! How could God do that to his chosen people, who worship his only Son! When a Valid Syllogism fails to prove out, we know one thing: Something must be wrong with the Major or Minor Premise!

WHY ROD LAVER IS NOT THE BEST MALE TENNIS PLAYER OF ALL-TIME!

1- This is 2008. In 2038, neither Sampras nor Federer will probably make many lists as No. 1. Tennis is always evolving. Since this is 2008, Laver must use composite rackets, learn to hit swinging volleys, improve his serve and learn to play on surfaces other than clay and grass, and swing much harder. If you asked that question in Laver's day, he was not only No. 1, he was the only real tennis player. Big Bill Tilden was even worse. He was long, lean, and his tennis can best be compared to today's Badminton.

2. Laver won his 2 Royal Grand Slams on 2 surfaces only: clay and grass. Borg did the same, but never achieved a Royal Grand Slam because US Open and Australian played on other surfaces.

3. Have you ever seen Laver's opponents play? I have! No. 2, fellow Australian Ken Rosewall, never hit a topspin backhand in his life. Even Steffi Graf hit them once in awhile. He only hit slice, 24-7, all the time. If you say Laver is No. 1 all-time, and you never saw him play, that isn't your opinion! It's somebody else's opinion, who actually saw him play - but not yours.

4. Laver played with wooden racquets. I owned 2 wooded racquets until the early 80s. I never played tennis with them - Badminton maybe, but not tennis. It's not Laver's fault, but that's the breaks. Laver was so far ahead of everybody else in his day, the wonder is that he didn't win every set of every match he ever played. The fact that he sometimes lost to those naive opponents proves he wasn't the Best of All-Time.

5. Laver did hit topspin on both wings while the rest hit the ball flat or as flat as they could with no margin of error over the net. It was like a man against preschoolers. The minute I saw Borg warmup, I knew he would beat Nastase in Grand Slam final. I had never seen anybody play that way before. Nadal does it better!

There are other reasons, but for starters just deal with the 5 listed above.
