On July 5, 1827, thousands celebrated abolition of slavery in NYS with parade in downtown Manhattan. Although lawmakers actually outlawed slavery previous day, celebrations were held off until next day not to conflict with Independence Day.

Gov. David Paterson (D) wants to head off the expected $15.4 billion budget gap with a laundry list of new taxes and fees - sporting events, alcohol, Internet downloads, shopping, taxis, soda, movie tickets, cable TV will all cost more in NYS.
