A CRIPPLE WINS U.S. OPEN: Tiger Woods will not play anymore this year because of numerous injuries. Yet he won the U.S. Open! With similar physical ailments, could Roger Federer win Wimbledon, could Louis have beaten Schmeling, or could Simpson have run for 2,000 yards in one season? No! No! No! Why not? Because these guys are athletes! Chess, poker and bowling fit in this group of Non-Sports. Games? Maybe. Sports? NEVER!
College Wrestling is a sport because it is on the up-and-up! Pro Wrestling is a Sport only if Ben Hur film was a Sport and Messala could have actually won that race. Incidentally, Chariot Racing isn’t a sport either (except for the horses) although it requires better conditioning than either jockeys or racecar drivers have.
Being in great physical shape, with or without Steroids, is not the complete definition of or requirement for a Sport! A poker player can be a bodybuilder, but what use would it be to him at the card table! I admit Tiger has the best body in golf. That only accentuates how pitifully unfit the rest of the PGA is. And Tiger is 33, so he can only play another 35-40 years. Within the next 5 years, without Steroids, you can expect Tiger’s body to become more like Nicklaus’. But he will probably still win Majors.
Nobody could deny with good conscience that Big Brown is not an athlete - at least among horses! But Jesse Owens would have no chance in a mile and a quarter against any thoroughbred. Jesse couldn’t beat a cheetah either in a 100-yard dash. And none of us could beat a crow flying without benefit of mechanical devices. Just imagine the results if birds were allowed to enter High Jump events! Even with steroids, we’d have no chance in arm wrestling against a mature black bear, once the bear learned the rules.
Most of this stuff is obvious, even to sportsaholic addicts. But ESPN treats the PGA the same way it treats the NFL. HOGWASH! No wonder America is fucked up politically; we’re fucked up athletically too. And while we’re at it, the Slam Dunk is an exhibition, not a sporting event. Basketball is about winning, not exhibitionism. Yes 3-point contests can be fun. So can homerun-hitting contests! But those are not what those Sports are about. You can win a baseball game with singles too. You can win a basketball game with free-throws. If you don’t understand that, you probably engage in ‘Fantasy Football’. And you certainly don’t want to hear my opinion on that little Triviality. It still irritates me when I think about the time I got all the way to Checkout before I realized that magazine I had was not about the NFL Draft!
It’s called MARKETING and MERCHANDISING! Throw in FATHEAD and you’ve got a Triple Play in Stupidity!
But back to Golf! If I don’t consider Bodybuilding or Billiards as Sports, I certainly would not lump Golf into that Category, which represents a combination of physical effort while standing still and steady repetition of arm movements combined with the format of Croquet. No, Croquet isn’t a sport either! I’m not sure about Badminton though. There is some element of Sports Activity in that endeavor, which prompts me to place it ahead of Golf and the like in Sports Purgatory.
What astounds me is how Tiger Woods got a Sports Injury! Incidentally, Tiger holds no records for hitting the longest golf shots. That only proves you don’t need a great body, just good technique as in free-throws. Yes, free-throws are the non-sports aspect of basketball.
If you seriously disagree with me in these assessments, try not to think of me as Tabacco. Instead, just think of me today as Andy Rooney.
Tabacco: I consider myself both a funnel and a filter. I funnel information, not readily available on the Mass Media, which is ignored and/or suppressed. I filter out the irrelevancies and trivialities to save both the time and effort of my Readers and bring consternation to the enemies of Truth & Fairness! When you read Tabacco, if you don’t learn something NEW, I’ve wasted your time.
